About
Marcia Blau, LCSW
I am a holistic psychotherapist who has been practicing in New York City for more than 30 years. It has been my privilege to work with individuals, couples, and families.
I began as a clinical social worker with training in counseling from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health. I then spent several years studying and working at the Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia. My background left me well versed in many therapeutic modes. Yet I quickly learned that listening carefully was my most valuable therapeutic skill.
During those early years in practice, one of my sons was struggling with an “incurable” disorder. This led me to explore various forms of healing. For over 20 years I have been studying with an array of healers and spiritual teachers. I have also sought training in Somatic Experiencing and Presence Psychotherapy to work with trauma. I was profoundly influenced by these teachings, and by witnessing my son’s healing. Over time, my psychotherapy practice moved in a more holistic direction.
Working holistically has given me a broader understanding of human nature. It has shown me the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and soul. I have seen that when a problem is resolved in one area of a person’s life, there is healing taking place throughout the entire being. Knowing this allows me to begin wherever someone is able to engage in the process. It also helps me to find the particular way of working, be it guided meditation, inner child work, presence orienting, simply talking, etc.; that is most helpful for each person.
Ultimately, many years in practice have reinforced my understanding that first and foremost, people need to be heard. At the core of my work, I am an experienced listener who is attuned to both psychodynamics and the mind-body-soul connection.
